This is a stunning Spessartine garnet from Nigeria. Garnets from this area are famous for their incredible firey red colour. This gem in the light glows like it has a tourch inside. This is a truely stunning gem.
Spessartites occur in three basic flavors. There are the light and bright stones, which come from Nigeria, Ramona (CA) and the deeper reddish orange stones that also come from Nigeria. Then there are the fabulous tangerine orange ‘mandarin’ garnets from Namibia, which are in a class all by themselves. The name Garnet? may come from either the Middle English word gernet meaning dark red, or the Latin granatus (grain), possibly a reference to the Punica granatum (pomegranate), a plant with red seeds similar in shape, size, and color to some garnet crystals.
